Digital Eye Strain: How Screen Time Affects Your Eyes and What You Can Do

Phones, tablets and computers are now part of everyday life, and many people notice that their eyes feel less comfortable after a long period of screen use. Common symptoms include tired or aching eyes, dryness, grittiness, temporary blur, headaches and difficulty shifting focus from near to far.
These symptoms are often described as digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome. They can be uncomfortable and disruptive, but ordinary screen use is not known to cause permanent damage to healthy adult eyes. In most cases, the problem is related to how we use screens rather than the screen itself.
Why screens can make your eyes feel tired
Several factors can contribute at the same time.
- Reduced blinking: people tend to blink less often, and sometimes less completely, while concentrating on a screen. This allows the tear film to evaporate more quickly and can leave the eyes dry, gritty or watery.
- Prolonged close focus: the focusing system of the eyes works continuously during sustained near tasks. After a long session, some people notice aching around the eyes or temporary difficulty refocusing into the distance.
- Glare and poor lighting: reflections, a very bright screen in a dark room or strong light behind the monitor can all make viewing less comfortable.
- Small text or an unsuitable viewing distance: leaning forwards or squinting to read can increase visual effort and contribute to headaches, neck discomfort and poor posture.
- Dry surroundings: heating, air conditioning and low humidity can increase tear evaporation.
- Contact lenses: some contact lens wearers become more aware of dryness during prolonged screen use.
- An inaccurate or outdated prescription: even a relatively small uncorrected prescription can make sustained near work more demanding.
Persistent symptoms are therefore worth discussing during an eye examination, particularly when they continue despite sensible changes to the working environment.

Practical ways to make screen use more comfortable
Take regular distance-viewing breaks
The 20-20-20 rule is a useful memory aid: about every 20 minutes, look at something around 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. It is not a rigid medical prescription, but the principle is sensible. Looking away from the screen relaxes close focus and encourages more natural blinking.
Longer breaks also matter. Stand up, walk around, make a drink or spend part of a lunch break away from the desk rather than replacing one screen with another.
Remember to blink fully
Make a conscious effort to blink slowly and completely, especially when reading, gaming or working on detailed spreadsheets. A few gentle complete blinks can help restore the tear film. Positioning the screen slightly below eye level may also reduce the exposed surface of the eye and slow tear evaporation.
Improve the screen position
Place the main monitor directly in front of you at a comfortable distance. For many adults, an arm’s length is a reasonable starting point, although the best distance depends on screen size, text size and prescription. The top of the screen should usually be around eye level or slightly lower, so that you can view it without lifting your chin or leaning forwards.
Increase text size rather than moving closer. Adjust brightness so that the screen does not appear much brighter or darker than the surrounding room, and reduce reflections by repositioning lamps, blinds or the monitor.
Check the room and your posture
A supportive chair, relaxed shoulders and a screen positioned directly ahead can reduce the neck and shoulder discomfort that often accompanies digital eye strain. In a dry office, moving away from a direct fan or air-conditioning outlet may help. Some people also benefit from a humidifier.
Do blue-light filtering glasses prevent digital eye strain?
Blue-light filtering lenses are widely promoted for computer use, but the best current clinical evidence does not show a meaningful short-term reduction in computer-related eye strain compared with ordinary spectacle lenses. There is also no good evidence that everyday screen light causes retinal damage in healthy adults or that blue-blocking glasses are required to protect the eyes from it.
This does not mean that glasses cannot help. The most important consideration is an accurate prescription. A good anti-reflection coating can reduce distracting surface reflections, while some people benefit from task-specific occupational, computer or enhanced single-vision lenses designed around their actual working distance. The correct option depends on your prescription, age, screen setup and symptoms rather than a general claim about blue light.
Dry eyes and screen use
Long periods at a screen can aggravate dry-eye symptoms because of reduced blinking and tear evaporation. Symptoms may include soreness, grittiness, burning, intermittent blur, light sensitivity or unexpectedly watery eyes.

Lubricating eye drops can be useful for some people, but persistent symptoms should be assessed rather than repeatedly self-treated without advice. Different drops suit different causes, and redness, pain or a sudden change in vision should not simply be assumed to be screen-related.
Children, screens and short-sightedness
For children, the concern is not that screens directly damage the eyes. The more relevant issue is the balance between prolonged near work and time spent outdoors. A high amount of close work, whether on a tablet, phone or book, is associated with the development and progression of short-sightedness in some children, while regular time outdoors in daylight appears protective.
Encourage children to take breaks from close tasks, avoid holding devices unnecessarily close and spend time outdoors most days. Screens should not be blamed in isolation: reading, homework and other near activities also count. When glasses may help
Some people need no special screen glasses at all. Others may benefit from:
- an updated distance or reading prescription;
- occupational lenses with a wider intermediate and near area;
- enhanced single-vision lenses for demanding near and digital tasks;
- an anti-reflection coating to reduce reflections;
- different glasses for different working distances.

When to arrange an eye examination
Book an examination when symptoms persist, recur frequently, affect concentration or are accompanied by ongoing blur. An examination can check your prescription, focusing and binocular vision, eye surface and general eye health, and may identify causes that have little to do with the screen itself.
